Why I joined the Socialist Party

Reading Time: < 1 minutes

As an international student, I was looking forward to an exiting experience in a new country. Little did I know that I would meet a party and become politically active!

I always had far left views and was aware of the various social problems that exist in the world but I hadn’t yet realised that they were all a result of the capitalist system.

By interacting with the Socialist Party, I was impressed by their organisation, their clarity on political issues and the direction they were taking. Most importantly they were patient and had sound ideas.

At first I wasn’t convinced that I should join a political party. The defining moment came during a picket of workers at the Visy factory. While other socialist groups were purely focused on selling their magazine, members of the Socialist Party were on the front line stopping trucks – some were arrested.

This showed me that the Socialist Party was serious about ideas but also action. I wanted to be part of it. A few demonstrations later I became a proud member of the Socialist Party.

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare many of the problems with capitalism. The Socialist strives to explain the systemic causes of this crisis, and reports about the issues that are important to working people. We also help to organise struggles against the powers that be.

We don’t receive a cent from big business or governments. Our work is fully funded by our supporters. Even if half the people who read our website every month donated a few dollars each we would raise thousands to help our work!

We need organisations of struggle now more than ever, so if you support what we do please consider making a donation.

One-off or regular donations can be made securely HERE.
